Gravitation

La revolución de la luna alrededor de la Tierra indica la presencia de una fuerza que la atrae hacia el centro de la órbita.
Issac Newton propuso que esta fuerza de atracción es la misma que tira de una manzana hacia el suelo.
Fue una idea revolucionaria, ya que se creía que los objetos celestes y los objetos en la Tierra seguían reglas diferentes.
La luna tarda 27,3 días en orbitar la Tierra. Teniendo en cuenta la distancia media a la Luna, se puede estimar su aceleración. 
La relación entre la aceleración lunar y la aceleración de un objeto que cae sobre la Tierra indica que la aceleración es inversamente proporcional a la distancia al cuadrado.
Dado que la fuerza es la masa por la aceleración, la fuerza gravitacional es directamente proporcional a la masa e inversamente proporcional a la distancia al cuadrado.

En los años anteriores a Newton, prevalecía una creencia general de que diferentes leyes gobernaban los objetos en el cielo que los objetos en la Tierra. Cuando Kepler escribió las tres leyes del movimiento planetario, explicando en detalle las propiedades geométricas de las órbitas planetarias alrededor del Sol, no hubo una idea inmediata para discernir su conexión con leyes más fundamentales. Fue Isaac Newton quien, en 1665-66, descubrió la conexión entre el movimiento planetario, el movimiento de la luna alrededor de la Tierra y el fenómeno cotidiano de los objetos que caen sobre la superficie de la Tierra. Este fenómeno universal se conoce hoy como gravitación. Aunque suene común hoy en día, la afirmación de que el mismo fenómeno gobierna el movimiento de los objetos en la Tierra y el movimiento de la luna alrededor de la Tierra fue revolucionaria en tiempos de Newton. Descubrió que la aceleración de la luna centrífuga alrededor de la Tierra y la aceleración debido a la gravedad tienen una relación inversamente proporcional al cuadrado de la distancia respectiva del objeto a la Tierra. Dado que la aceleración es independiente de la masa, según sus leyes del movimiento, la fuerza debe ser proporcional a la masa. Esta idea lo llevó a formular la ley de la gravitación que lleva su nombre. Otra información necesaria para completar la ley de gravitación de Newton era la constante gravitacional, que se derivó experimentalmente. El primer experimento exitoso para medir la constante fue llevado a cabo por Henry Cavendish. Newton’s law of gravitation links falling objects, the Moon’s orbit, and planetary motion. Before Newton, many people thought the sky and Earth followed different laws. Kepler later described the three laws of planetary motion, but their connection to a deeper force was still unclear.

Isaac Newton made that connection in 1665 to 1666. He showed that the same phenomenon explains why objects fall to Earth and why the Moon moves around Earth. He also found that the Moon’s centripetal acceleration and the acceleration due to gravity follow an inverse-square relationship with distance from Earth.

Newton used this idea with his laws of motion to build the law of gravitation. Because acceleration does not depend on mass, the force must be proportional to mass. The law also needs the gravitational constant, which was measured experimentally.

Henry Cavendish carried out the first successful experiment to measure that constant. Once its value was known, Newton’s laws of motion could be combined with gravitation to derive Kepler’s laws of planetary motion. This made gravitation a key link between everyday motion and the motion of the planets.
