Speed of a Transverse Wave

Considere una cuerda tensa flexible en una posición de equilibrio con una densidad de masa lineal μ y una fuerza de tracción T.
Cuando se aplica una fuerza constante hacia arriba en el extremo derecho, una onda transversal viaja a través de la cuerda con velocidad constante.
El pequeño elemento de longitud Δx oscila perpendicular al movimiento de la onda debido a la fuerza restauradora de la cuerda.
La fuerza en cada extremo es tangente a la cuerda.

La velocidad de una onda depende de las características del medio. Por ejemplo, en el caso de una guitarra, las cuerdas vibran para producir el sonido. La velocidad de las ondas en las cuerdas y la longitud de onda determinan la frecuencia del sonido producido. Las cuerdas de una guitarra tienen diferentes grosores, pero pueden estar hechas de un material similar. The speed of transverse waves on a string depends on the string’s tension and its mass per unit length. A string with more tension has stronger restoring forces. Those forces help pull the string back to straight after it is disturbed, so the wave moves faster.

Mass per unit length is the mass of a string divided by its length. It is also called linear density. Strings on a guitar can have different thicknesses even when they are made of similar material, so they can have different linear densities.

Wave speed matters for stringed musical instruments because it helps determine the frequency of the sound produced along with wavelength. It also connects to other mechanical waves, since many of them follow the same main mathematical expression as waves on a string. Wave speed is a key property of any wave.

The idea of wave speed also explains real-world events. Light waves travel much faster than sound waves in air. That is why a flash from lightning is seen before the clap of thunder is heard.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
