Qualitative Analysis

El análisis cualitativo es la identificación de elementos, iones o compuestos en una muestra desconocida. Es el primero de los tres tipos de análisis basados en la jerarquía de propósito y el tipo de información requerida.
El análisis cualitativo se realiza a través de métodos clásicos e instrumentales.
Los métodos clásicos se basan en el resultado perceptible de reacciones químicas selectivas o específicas identificables por los sentidos humanos.
Las reacciones selectivas tienen un grado de preferencia hacia el analito en comparación con los otros componentes de la muestra. Por el contrario, solo se producen reacciones específicas con el analito.
El preacondicionamiento de la muestra, como la precipitación o la extracción, mejora la selectividad de una reacción hacia el analito.
En comparación, los métodos instrumentales miden una propiedad física distinguible del analito. Por ejemplo, los picos individuales de un espectro infrarrojo indican un grupo funcional específico en la muestra.

Qualitative analysis identifies the elements, ions, or compounds in an unknown sample. It is the first step in the hierarchy of analytical goals. That makes it the starting point for scientific study before quantitative analysis or other forms of analysis.

Two main approaches are used in qualitative analysis: classical methods and instrumental methods. Classical methods depend on the visible or sensory result of a chemical reaction, such as a color change, a precipitate, or even a smell. These reactions may be selective, meaning they favor the target analyte, or specific, meaning they react only with that analyte.

Classical analysis may also use preconditioning steps to improve selectivity. Precipitation and extraction are two examples of these steps. In a precipitation reaction, a reagent is added to form a solid precipitate. The precipitate can then be filtered and analyzed further.

Instrumental methods identify a sample by measuring its unique physical properties. Infrared, or IR, spectroscopy is one example. In IR spectroscopy, distinct peaks in a spectrum match specific functional groups, which helps identify compounds in the sample. Together, classical and instrumental methods provide the basic tools used to identify unknown components in scientific samples.
