El manejo de muestras comprende dos aspectos críticos para garantizar resultados precisos: almacenamiento y transporte. 
El transporte se refiere al proceso de trasladar muestras al laboratorio sin ningún cambio en sus características físicas o químicas. Durante el transporte, dependiendo de la naturaleza de la muestra, es posible que se requieran técnicas de conservación como la congelación y la conservación química para evitar cambios.
Por ejemplo, la congelación evita la degradación térmica de muestras sensibles a la temperatura. La adición de conservantes químicos como agentes antibacterianos a las muestras evita el crecimiento microbiano.
En el laboratorio, el almacenamiento adecuado de las muestras es esencial para evitar su degradación. Por ejemplo, las muestras térmicamente lábiles se empaquetan en recipientes sellados, se almacenan en refrigeradores o se congelan.
