Dentro del límite elástico, la tensión máxima en un eje circular sólido varía linealmente con una distancia radial desde su eje.
A medida que aumenta el par, la tensión máxima alcanza un valor de saturación al inicio del límite elástico. Sustituyendo este valor de saturación, se puede calcular el par elástico máximo correspondiente, para el cual la deformación permanece completamente elástica.
Sustituyendo a J/c, expresa el par en términos de distancia radial y la tensión máxima.
A medida que el par aumenta aún más, se desarrolla una región plástica en el eje alrededor de un núcleo elástico de radio ρY.
En la región plástica, la tensión es uniformemente igual a τY, mientras que en el núcleo elástico, la tensión varía linealmente con ρ.
Al aumentar aún más el par, la región plástica se expande hasta que la deformación es completamente plástica.
El par total en el eje circular sólido se puede expresar como una superposición de pares en las regiones elástica y plástica.
Simplificando aún más la ecuación y sustituyendo ρY a medida que se acerca a cero, se puede determinar el valor límite del par plástico, correspondiente a una deformación completamente plástica.

 A medida que aumenta el torque sobre el eje, se desarrolla la región plástica que rodea el núcleo elástico interno, caracterizada por un nivel de tensión constante en el área plástica y una distribución lineal de la tensión dentro del núcleo elástico. Con un aumento continuo del torque, la zona plástica se extiende, disminuyendo el núcleo elástico, hasta que la deformación a través del eje se vuelve completamente plástica.
 
 El torque total ejercido sobre el eje es una suma de los torques asociados con las regiones de deformación elástica y plástica. Mediante un mayor análisis y simplificación, centrándose en la expansión de la región plástica, se puede calcular el torque plástico último. El torque plástico máximo es el torque máximo que el eje puede soportar antes de sucumbir a una deformación plástica completa, perdiendo por completo su forma original.

Circular shafts under torsion show a clear change from elastic behavior to plastic deformation as torque increases. In the elastic limit, stress rises in direct proportion to the distance from the shaft’s center. The outer material carries the highest stress first, and the shaft can still return to its original shape.

At a critical stress level, the shaft begins to yield. This marks the maximum torque the shaft can carry without permanent deformation. Beyond this point, a plastic region forms near the outside of the shaft, while an inner elastic core remains. In the plastic area, stress stays constant, but the elastic core still follows a linear stress pattern.

As torque keeps increasing, the plastic zone grows and the elastic core shrinks. The shaft eventually becomes fully plastic across its cross section. The total torque at any stage comes from both the elastic and plastic parts together. By examining how the plastic region expands, it is possible to calculate the ultimate plastic torque, which is the maximum torque the shaft can withstand before it loses its original form completely.
