En el hormigón totalmente compactado compuesto por áridos sanos y limpios, la reducción de la relación agua-cemento aumenta su resistencia, un concepto comúnmente conocido como ley de Abrams.
El agua en el concreto debe estar adecuadamente disponible para la hidratación, la absorción por agregados y formas, para contrarrestar la evaporación y para cumplir con los requisitos de trabajabilidad de la mezcla.
Dado que la hidratación es el proceso para el que se requiere principalmente agua, un curado adecuado facilita la hidratación después del fraguado final del cemento.
El agua añadida para mejorar la trabajabilidad del hormigón supera la cantidad necesaria para la hidratación, lo que provoca la formación de huecos capilares. Esto aumenta la porosidad y permeabilidad del hormigón, al tiempo que disminuye su resistencia y afecta a su aspecto superficial.
En los usos típicos del hormigón, las proporciones de agua-cemento varían aproximadamente entre 0,45 y 0,60 en peso.
Mantener una baja relación agua-cemento mejora la resistencia a la intemperie, asegura una fuerte adherencia entre capas consecutivas de hormigón, fomenta una unión sólida con el refuerzo de acero y minimiza los cambios de volumen por las fluctuaciones de humedad.

La relación agua-hormigón es fundamental para definir la calidad del hormigón. Esta relación, un equilibrio entre el peso del agua y el hormigón en la mezcla, determina la resistencia, la durabilidad y la resistencia del hormigón a los factores ambientales. Como se indica en la ley de Abrams, menos agua en la mezcla equivale a un hormigón más resistente. Sin embargo, el agua es esencial no solo para el proceso químico de hidratación, sino también para la trabajabilidad y compactación del hormigón. Si bien la hidratación une químicamente el agua y el hormigón, la absorción física del agua en el gel de hormigón también es necesaria para una hidratación completa.

El exceso de agua utilizada para facilitar la trabajabilidad genera huecos capilares una vez que se evapora, lo que a su vez aumenta la porosidad y la permeabilidad, reduciendo así la resistencia. Las aplicaciones de hormigón estándar mantienen proporciones agua-hormigón de 0,45 a 0,60. Las proporciones más bajas dan como resultado un hormigón más denso y resistente que se encoge menos, pero puede requerir aditivos para lograr la fluidez deseada para su colocación. Es fundamental utilizar suficiente agua para garantizar la maleabilidad del hormigón sin comprometer sus cualidades de curado. Concrete strength depends on the balance between water and cement in the mix. This water-cement ratio is the weight of water compared with the weight of cement. It affects strength, durability, and how well concrete resists environmental stress.

Abrams’ law shows that less water usually makes stronger concrete. Water is still needed for hydration, which is the chemical process that binds water and cement. It also helps the mix stay workable and compactable. Some water must be absorbed into the cement gel so hydration can finish properly.

Too much water can weaken concrete. Extra water makes the mix easier to place, but it leaves capillary voids after it evaporates. These spaces increase porosity and permeability, which lowers strength. Standard concrete often uses a water-cement ratio from 0.45 to 0.60.
