Additionally, wear and tear over time contribute to further inaccuracies.Natural errors are caused by factors such as temperature, wind, moisture, and magnetic variations.&#160;For instance, on a summer day, a steel tape can expand slightly due to heat. Each time the tape is used to measure a distance, this expansion introduces a small temperature error.

Survey measurements can be affected by errors and mistakes. These issues create inaccuracies in measured values and in the way data is recorded. In surveying, errors are unintentional deviations from the true value. They can come from human sensory limits, imperfect equipment, or outside conditions.

Mistakes are different from errors. They happen when the surveyor loses attention, misunderstands a procedure, or makes a bad judgment call. Common examples include writing down the wrong value, reading an instrument incorrectly, or marking a survey point in the wrong place. Both errors and mistakes can reduce the accuracy and reliability of surveying results.

Personal errors happen when a surveyor estimates a fraction of a scale. A scale cannot be read perfectly, so the reading is always slightly off. Instrumental errors come from flaws or misalignment in the survey tools themselves. These problems can get worse as the instruments wear out.

Natural errors come from environmental conditions. Temperature changes, wind, moisture, and magnetic variation can all affect measurements. For example, a 30-meter steel tape can expand by a few hundredths of a meter on a hot day. That creates a temperature error each time the tape is used to measure 30 meters. Identifying and correcting these issues is important because uncorrected errors and mistakes can lead to major inaccuracies in surveying data.
