Si se tiene que calcular el caudal de una bomba centrífuga que aplica una presión de 7500 julios por segundo para elevar agua desde un depósito en un nivel inferior a un depósito en un nivel superior, se puede utilizar la ecuación de energía.
La diferencia de nivel entre los embalses es de 10 metros y la pérdida de carga es de 5 metros.
Como las superficies de ambos embalses están abiertas a la atmósfera, la presión y la velocidad tanto en la entrada como en la salida son cero, lo que simplifica aún más la ecuación energética.
Aquí, la cabeza de la bomba se obtiene por el cociente de la entrada de potencia neta del eje y el producto del peso unitario del agua y el caudal.
Si se sustituye el cabezal de la bomba por la ecuación de energía simplificada, se puede obtener el caudal de la bomba.
Además, si se sustituyen los valores proporcionados en la expresión por el caudal, se obtiene el valor final que indica la velocidad a la que se bombea el agua.

Centrifugal pump flow rate can be calculated with the energy equation. In this problem, water moves between two reservoirs at different elevations, and the pump provides the energy needed for the transfer. The pump input is 7500 joules per second, the elevation difference is 10 meters, and the head loss from friction and other resistances is 5 meters.

Both reservoirs are open to the atmosphere, so the pressure at the inlet and outlet is the same. That means the pressure terms in the energy equation cancel. The flow at the inlet and outlet is also negligible, so the velocity terms drop out as well.

With pressure and velocity terms removed, the equation depends on the gravitational head and the pump head. The pump head is found by dividing the net shaft power input by the product of the flow rate and the specific weight of water. Substituting that head into the energy equation makes it possible to solve for the pump flow rate.
