El útero, o la matriz, proporciona un entorno nutritivo para la implantación y el desarrollo de un óvulo fertilizado.
Es un órgano hueco en forma de pera en la cavidad pélvica, situado entre la vejiga y el recto.
Por lo general, el útero se inclina hacia adelante en su base, cubriendo la vejiga urinaria desde el aspecto superior.
De hecho, el útero está sostenido por varios ligamentos, pero los tres principales son: ligamentos anchos, ligamentos redondos y ligamentos uterosacros.
Un útero no grávido mide aproximadamente 7-8 cm de largo, 5 cm de ancho y 2,5 cm de grosor, aunque estas dimensiones pueden variar según la edad y los antecedentes de embarazo.
La parte superior redondeada del útero, por encima de las trompas uterinas adjuntas, se denomina fondo de ojo.
