La fertilización in vitro, o FIV, es un proceso en el que los óvulos se fertilizan con espermatozoides en un laboratorio y luego se implantan en el útero.
El proceso comienza con la estimulación ovárica, donde los medicamentos hacen que los ovarios produzcan varios óvulos en lugar de solo uno, lo que mejora la eficiencia de la recolección de óvulos.
En la siguiente etapa, la recuperación de ovocitos, se recuperan múltiples ovocitos maduros.
Los ovarios se examinan con una sonda de ultrasonido vaginal, y una guía de aguja ayuda al médico a insertar con precisión la aguja en cada folículo para recuperar el ovocito y el líquido folicular.
