Objective Basis

Objective basis in accounting is the use of observable, supportable evidence to measure, record, and report financial information rather than relying primarily on personal judgment. Accountants establish this basis through source documents such as invoices, contracts, bank records, and market data, then apply consistent recognition and valuation rules so another qualified reviewer can verify the result. This approach strengthens reliability, comparability, and auditability in financial statements, particularly when documenting asset costs, liabilities, revenues, and expenses. Although professional judgment remains necessary when evidence is incomplete, an objective basis helps limit bias and supports decisions by investors, managers, auditors, and regulators.
