Cell Culture Compatibility

Cell culture compatibility is the ability of cultured cells to remain viable, proliferate, and maintain relevant functions in a defined laboratory environment, including contact with media, surfaces, scaffolds, or devices. It depends on how material properties and culture conditions influence cell adhesion, nutrient exchange, waste removal, pH, osmolality, and biochemical signaling, while avoiding toxicity or contamination. In bioengineering, compatibility testing helps researchers select biomaterials, bioreactors, and microfluidic platforms that support reproducible cell behavior. These assessments improve the reliability of tissue-engineered constructs, disease models, and cell-based assays by linking engineered environments to biological performance.

Here is a protocol to grow pluripotent stem cells (PSC) and neural stem cells (NSC) in an enclosed cell culture system that permits maximum sterility and reproducibility, replacing the traditional biosafety cabinet and incubator. This equipment meets clinical good manufacturing practice (cGMP) and clinical good lab practice (cGLP) guidelines.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA While the use of various chemicals in experimental research is essential, it is also important to safely store and maintain them as a part of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. The properties of chemicals and their reactivity vary broadly and if chemicals are not managed, stored, and labeled properly, they can have harmful or even destructive consequences such as toxic fume...
