Kinematic Mirror

A kinematic mirror is an optical component mounted so that its orientation can be adjusted with precise, repeatable control while its reflective surface remains mechanically constrained. The mount typically uses three defined contact points, with two adjustment screws or actuators controlling angular tilt around perpendicular axes and a fixed reference point maintaining stability. In bioengineering, kinematic mirrors help align laser beams, fluorescence excitation paths, imaging systems, and optical trapping instruments. Accurate alignment improves beam positioning, focusing, and measurement consistency, supporting applications such as microscopy, biosensing, cell manipulation, and quantitative analysis of biological samples.

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the kinematics of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. This lab will begin by studying motion in 1 dimension, under constant acceleration, by launching a projectile directly upward and measuring the maximum height reached. This lab will verify that the maximum height reached is consistent with the kinematic...

Motor Learning in Mirror Drawing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Colloquially, the terms learning and memory encompass a broad range of behaviors and mental systems, everything from learning to tie a shoe to mastering calculus (and a lot in between). Experimental psychologists have divided up learning mechanisms into groups that seem to have different properties, and that seem to rely on different brain systems. A major division is between declarative and non-declarative memory, roughly, the...

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

The article describes an assay for studying zebrafish’s aggression. The method uses a simple mirror and observes zebrafish’s behavioral response towards its own reflection in mirror.

Kinematic Equations - I

When an object moves with constant acceleration, the velocity of the object changes at a constant rate throughout the motion. The kinematic equations of motions are derived for such cases where the acceleration of the object is constant. The first kinematic equation gives an insight into the relationship between velocity, acceleration, and time. We can see, for example: Final velocity depends on how large the acceleration is and how long it lasts If the acceleration is zero, then the final...
