Tracheal Injury Model

A tracheal injury model is an experimental system that reproduces damage to the airway and enables researchers to study tissue injury, repair, and functional recovery. Injury may be induced under controlled conditions in animal, ex vivo, or engineered tissue systems, triggering epithelial disruption, inflammation, extracellular matrix remodeling, and regenerative responses. In bioengineering, these models help evaluate biomaterials, tissue-engineered grafts, scaffolds, and cell-based therapies for tracheal reconstruction. By linking injury severity and repair processes with airway structure and function, they provide a basis for testing safety, integration, and long-term performance before translation to clinical research.

Intratracheal instillations deliver solutes directly into the lungs. This procedure targets the delivery of the instillate into the distal regions of the lung, and is therefore often incorporated in studies aimed at studying alveoli. We provide a detailed survival protocol for performing intratracheal instillations in mice.

Athletes absorb several hundred mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI)/concussions every year; however, the consequence of these on the brain is poorly understood. Therefore, an animal model of single and repetitive mTBI that consistently replicates clinically relevant symptoms provides the means to advance the study of mTBI and concussion.
