Central Diabetes Insipidus

Central diabetes insipidus is a disorder of water balance caused by insufficient production or release of arginine vasopressin, also called antidiuretic hormone, from the hypothalamus or posterior pituitary. Without this hormone, the kidney’s collecting ducts cannot adequately increase water reabsorption, so the body produces large volumes of dilute urine and often triggers intense thirst. Diagnosis combines clinical assessment with urine and blood osmolality testing, sometimes including water deprivation and evaluation of the response to desmopressin. In biology and clinical research, central diabetes insipidus illustrates hypothalamic-pituitary control of homeostasis and supports investigation of disorders affecting this regulatory system.

Definition Diabetes insipidus is a disorder marked by the production of large amounts of dilute urine because of impaired vasopressin production, release, or kidney response. The lack of effective vasopressin action limits water reabsorption in the renal collecting ducts, which leads to excessive urinary water loss and intense thirst.Clinical PresentationIndividuals with diabetes insipidus report persistent thirst and very high urine output. In severe cases, fluid intake can reach up to 20...

Normally, water balance is maintained through three interconnected mechanisms: the hypothalamic thirst center, the synthesis and release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH, or vasopressin), and the kidneys' responsiveness to this hormone. ADH is synthesized in the hypothalamus, released from the posterior pituitary, and acts on the distal nephron, allowing water reabsorption and concentrated urine production.Diabetes Insipidus and Its TypesIn diabetes insipidus (DI), this regulatory system is...

Our protocol was developed to cleanly and easily deliver islets or cells under the kidney capsule of mice. Cells are concentrated into pellets in the final tubing used for transplanting the cells under the kidney capsule. The ease of this technique reduces stress to the cells and the mouse.

The "center" of a data set is also a way of describing location. The two most widely used measures of the "center" of the data are the mean (average) and the median. The words "mean" and "average" are often used interchangeably. The substitution of one word for the other is common practice. The technical term is "arithmetic mean" and "average" is technically a center location. However, in practice among non-statisticians, "average" is commonly accepted for "arithmetic mean." Another measure of...
