Lacrimal System

The lacrimal system is a network of glands, ducts, and drainage structures that produces and clears tears, maintaining a healthy, protected ocular surface. The lacrimal gland secretes the aqueous component of the tear film, which spreads across the eye during blinking, while the lacrimal puncta, canaliculi, lacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct transport tears into the nasal cavity. Tears lubricate the cornea, supply nutrients, remove debris, and provide antimicrobial protection through components such as lysozyme and immunoglobulins. Studying this system supports understanding of vision, ocular surface biology, dry eye disease, excessive tearing, infection, and disorders caused by blocked tear drainage.

In this video, we demonstrate the inoculation of Concanavalin A, a lymphocyte mitogen, into the inferior lacrimal gland of the eye of a rabbit to induce dry eye disease. Ultrasound or sonogram images are used to guide the precise location of the injection site and also to confirm the success of inoculation.
