Viral Gene Transfer

Viral gene transfer is the delivery of genetic material into cells using viruses or engineered viral vectors, a process that helps researchers study gene function and develop therapies. Viral particles recognize specific cell-surface receptors, enter target cells, and release DNA or RNA cargo, which may remain separate from the cell’s genome or integrate into it depending on the vector and its design. In biology, this approach supports gene expression studies, vaccine development, and the treatment of inherited disorders through gene therapy. Its effectiveness depends on factors such as vector tropism, cargo capacity, immune responses, and the duration of gene expression.

Horizontal Gene Transfer

2025

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a process where genetic material moves between organisms within the same generation, unlike vertical gene transfer, which occurs from parent to offspring. HGT plays a crucial role in microbial evolution, adaptation, and survival, particularly in shared environments like the human gut.Mobile genetic elements such as plasmids, prophages, integrons, insertion sequences, and transposons facilitate this process. HGT occurs through three primary mechanisms:...

A method of gene transfer into chicken embryos at later incubation stages (older than Hamburger and Hamilton stage (HH) 22) is described. This method overcomes disadvantages of in ovo electroporation applied to older chicken embryos and is a useful technique to study gene function and regulation at older developmental stages.
