Zebrafish Eye Anatomy

Zebrafish eye anatomy describes the structures and organization of the zebrafish visual system, which supports vision and provides a useful model for studying vertebrate eye biology. Light passes through the transparent cornea and lens, which focus images onto the retina, where rod and cone photoreceptors convert light into neural signals processed by retinal circuits and transmitted through the optic nerve. Because zebrafish eyes share key features with human eyes and remain accessible during development, researchers use them to investigate retinal development, visual function, eye disease, neural repair, and responses to genetic or pharmacological treatments.

Lens Transplantation in Zebrafish and its Application in the Analysis of Eye Mutants

Lens development involves interactions with other tissues. Several zebrafish eye mutants are characterized by an abnormally small lens size. Here we demonstrate a lens transplantation experiment to determine whether this phenotype is due to intrinsic causes or defective interactions with tissues that surround the lens.

Light sheet fluorescence microscopy is an excellent tool for imaging embryonic development. It allows recording of long time-lapse movies of live embryos in near physiological conditions. We demonstrate its application for imaging zebrafish eye development across wide spatio-temporal scales and present a pipeline for fusion and deconvolution of multiview datasets.

In vivo Electroporation of Morpholinos into the Adult Zebrafish Retina

2011

A method to conditionally knockdown a target protein’s expression in the adult zebrafish retina is described, which involves intravitreally injecting antisense morpholinos and electroporating them into the retina. The resulting protein is knocked down for several days, which allows testing the protein’s role in the regenerating or intact retina.
