Alumina

Alumina, or aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), is a chemically stable ceramic material valued for its hardness, thermal resistance, and insulating properties. Industrially, it is commonly obtained from bauxite through the Bayer process, in which sodium hydroxide dissolves aluminum-bearing minerals, aluminum hydroxide precipitates from the clarified solution, and calcination removes water to form alumina. Its surface chemistry, high melting point, and porous forms support applications as an abrasive, refractory, catalyst support, adsorbent, and electrical insulator. In chemistry and materials research, alumina also provides a model system for studying oxide surfaces, heterogeneous catalysis, and ceramic processing.

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Surface area and pore size distribution are attributes used by adsorbent and catalyst manufacturers and users to ensure quality control and to determine when products are at the end of their useful lives. The surface area of a porous solid is directly related to its adsorption capacity or catalytic activity. The pore size distribution of an adsorbent or catalyst is...

Source: Faisal Alamgir, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA The imaging of microscopic structures of solid materials, and the analysis of the structural components imaged, is known as materialography. Qualitative information such as, for example, whether or not there is porosity in the material, what the size and shape distribution of the grains look like, or whether there is anisotropy to the microstructure can be directly observed. We will...

2016

Here, we prepare and characterize novel tree-like hierarchical ZnO/CdSSe nanostructures, where CdSSe branches are grown on vertically aligned ZnO nanowires. The resulting nanotrees are a potential material for solar energy conversion and other opto-electronic devices.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jimmy Franco - Merrimack College Column chromatography is one of the most useful techniques for purifying compounds. This technique utilizes a stationary phase, which is packed in a column, and a mobile phase that passes through the column. This technique exploits the differences in polarity between compounds, allowing the molecules to be facilely separated.1 The two most common stationary phases for column chromatography are silica gel (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3), with...
