Nitrogen Contribution

Nitrogen contribution describes the role nitrogen plays in a substance, reaction, or chemical system, including its effects on composition, bonding, and reactivity. With five valence electrons, nitrogen forms covalent bonds and can adopt several oxidation states, allowing it to influence molecular structure, electron distribution, acid–base behavior, and redox processes. Assessing nitrogen contribution helps chemists interpret molecular formulas, reaction pathways, and material properties. This concept is relevant to fertilizers and nutrient cycling, nitrogen-containing pharmaceuticals, polymers, fuels, and environmental chemistry, where nitrogen transformations affect biological availability, atmospheric chemistry, and the formation or removal of reactive compounds.

The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

Contribution Margin

2026

Understanding contribution margin helps businesses evaluate how individual products contribute to covering costs and generating profit. It is calculated as the difference between selling price per unit and teh variable cost per unit. The contribution margin is the portion of sales revenue remaining after variable costs are deducted. This amount is used to cover fixed costs and generate profit. Unlike gross margin, contribution margin excludes fixed production costs, making it useful for...

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...

Contribution Margin Ratio

2026

The contribution margin ratio measures the portion of each sales dollar available to cover fixed costs and generate profit after variable costs have been deducted. It provides a simple way to evaluate profitability and operational efficiency. The ratio is calculated as:Contribution Margin Ratio = Contribution Margin ÷ Total SalesSince contribution margin equals total sales minus total variable costs, the ratio shows how much of every sales dollar remains after paying variable expenses. For...
