Silver Trifluoroacetate Reagent

Silver trifluoroacetate is a silver(I) salt of trifluoroacetic acid, commonly written AgO2CCF3, and a useful reagent in organic and coordination chemistry. It matters because its silver(I) center can activate substrates while its trifluoroacetate counterion often remains comparatively non-nucleophilic. In a typical reaction, silver(I) binds halide released from an organic halide, and precipitation of insoluble silver halide drives ionization or substitution and can generate reactive organosilver intermediates. This behavior supports halide abstraction, functional-group exchange, and selected rearrangement, coupling, or cyclization reactions. In laboratory synthesis, the reagent provides a controlled way to alter substrate reactivity and access products that may be difficult to obtain by direct nucleophilic substitution alone.

Femtosecond-laser direct-writing is frequently used to create three-dimensional (3D) patterns in polymers and glasses. However, patterning metals in 3D remains a challenge. We describe a method for fabricating silver nanostructures embedded inside a polymer matrix using a femtosecond laser centered at 800 nm.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...
