Spherical Micelles

Spherical micelles are nanoscale assemblies of amphiphilic molecules that organize into roughly spherical structures in a solvent, making them important for controlling how molecules interact with water and other phases. In aqueous solutions, surfactant molecules aggregate above the critical micelle concentration, directing their hydrophobic tails inward and hydrophilic heads outward through the hydrophobic effect. This structure enables micelles to solubilize nonpolar compounds in water, influence interfacial tension, and support chemical transport. Spherical micelles therefore play central roles in detergency, colloid chemistry, drug-delivery research, catalysis, and the study of self-assembly and molecular organization.

Micelle formation is an intricate process that hinges on the properties of amphiphilic or amphipathic molecules and the conditions of the system in which they are found. Amphiphilic molecules, which have both hydrophilic (water-attracting) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) parts, play a critical role in this process. In aqueous environments, these molecules arrange themselves such that their hydrophilic heads are turned towards the water phase, while their hydrophobic tails are oriented away...

A protocol for the preparation and characterization of lipophilic doxorubicin pro-drug loaded 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[amino(polyethylene glycol)-2000] (DSPE-PEG) micelles is described.

Spherical Coordinates

Spherical coordinate systems are preferred over Cartesian, polar, or cylindrical coordinates for systems with spherical symmetry. For example, to describe the surface of a sphere, Cartesian coordinates require all three coordinates. On the other hand, the spherical coordinate system requires only one parameter: the sphere's radius. As a result, the complicated mathematical calculations become simple. Spherical coordinates are used in science and engineering applications like electric and...

The key steps of living anionic polymerization of phenyl glycidyl ether (PheGE) on methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG-b-PPheGE) are described. The resulting block copolymer micelles (BCMs) were loaded with doxorubicin 14% (wt%) and sustained release of drug over 4 days under physiologically relevant conditions was obtained.
