Stir Plate

A stir plate is a laboratory device that uses a rotating magnetic field to mix liquids evenly without mechanical blades, making it a common tool in chemistry. The plate drives a magnetic stir bar placed inside a vessel, while adjustable rotation speed creates controlled fluid motion that promotes dissolution, maintains uniform concentration, and can support consistent temperature when paired with heating. Stir plates are used to prepare solutions, combine reactants, suspend particles, and maintain homogeneous samples during chemical reactions or analytical procedures. Their contact-free operation reduces contamination risk and allows mixing in sealed or covered vessels, although viscosity and vessel size can limit performance.

2018

The power input in stirred bioreactors can be measured through the torque that acts on the impeller shaft during rotation. This manuscript describes how an air bearing can be used to effectively reduce friction losses observed in mechanical seals and improve the accuracy of power input measurements in small-scale vessels.

Continuously-stirred Anaerobic Digester to Convert Organic Wastes into Biogas: System Setup and Basic Operation

Jet Impinging on an Inclined Plate

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The goal of this experiment is to demonstrate how a fluid flow exerts forces on structures by conversion of dynamic pressure into static pressure. To this end, we will make a plane jet impinge on a flat plate and will measure the resulting pressure distribution along the plate. The resultant force will be estimated by integrating the product between the...
