Blood Pressure Assessment

Blood pressure assessment is the clinical measurement of the force that circulating blood exerts on arterial walls, providing essential information about cardiovascular function and health. In a typical cuff-based assessment, an inflatable cuff temporarily compresses an artery, while a stethoscope detects Korotkoff sounds or an automated monitor analyzes pressure oscillations as blood flow returns; systolic and diastolic pressures are then recorded in millimeters of mercury. Accurate positioning, cuff size, rest, and repeated measurements help reduce error. Clinicians use these values to identify hypertension or hypotension, evaluate treatment, assess cardiovascular risk, and monitor changes during acute and long-term care.
