Controlled Clinical Studies

Controlled clinical studies are structured investigations that evaluate the effects, benefits, and risks of a medical intervention by comparing participants who receive it with a control group. Researchers use predefined protocols, eligibility criteria, outcome measures, and, when appropriate, randomization and blinding to reduce bias and distinguish treatment effects from natural disease variation or placebo responses. These studies can assess drugs, medical devices, behavioral interventions, or diagnostic approaches across phases of clinical research. Their results provide evidence for determining safety and efficacy, guiding patient care, supporting regulatory decisions, and identifying questions for future clinical investigation.

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

2024

Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy. Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast, controlled...

2016

The social amoebae Dictyostelium discoideum has recently been established as a system to study protein misfolding and proteostasis. Here, we describe a new imaging-based methodology to study temperature-induced protein aggregation and the cellular stress response in D. discoideum.

Aneurysm II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

Thoracic, aortic arch and abdominal aneurysms are significant vascular conditions that can present with various clinical manifestations and lead to serious complications. Understanding these manifestations and the appropriate diagnostic studies is essential for effective management and treatment.Thoracic Aortic AneurysmsThoracic aortic aneurysms often remain asymptomatic until they reach a size that impinges on adjacent structures. They typically cause deep, diffuse chest pain that radiates to...

Hypertension III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

Hypertension is asymptomatic and also referred to as the "silent killer" until it progresses to a severe stage or causes target organ disease. Patients may experience symptoms stemming from the strain on blood vessels and tissues in various organs or the heart's increased workload.Physical exams might show no abnormalities other than high blood pressure. Signs of vascular damage, when present, correspond to the organs supplied by the affected vessels, leading to target organ damage. For...
