Transthoracic Echo

Transthoracic echo, or transthoracic echocardiography, is a noninvasive ultrasound examination that produces images of the heart through the chest wall, supporting clinical assessment of cardiac structure and function. A transducer sends high-frequency sound waves into the chest and converts returning echoes into real-time images, while Doppler techniques measure the direction and speed of blood flow. Clinicians use transthoracic echo to evaluate heart chambers, valves, pumping performance, wall motion, and fluid around the heart. It helps investigate symptoms such as breathlessness or chest pain, monitor known cardiovascular disease, and guide diagnosis and treatment without exposing patients to ionizing radiation.

Transthoracic echocardiography offers a noninvasive method for the evaluation of cardiac function in mice. A combination of ultrasound and Doppler imaging modalities can be used to obtain dimensional measurements of the heart and intracardiac blood flow, which together provide an assessment of cardiac systolic and diastolic performance.

The human ear cannot distinguish between two sources of sound if they happen to reach within a specific time interval, typically 0.1 seconds apart. More than this, and they are perceived as separate sources. Imagine the sound is reflected back to the ears. Assuming that the source is very close to the human, the difference between hearing the two sounds—the emitted sound and the reflected sound—may be more than the minimum time for perceiving distinct sounds. If this is the case, then the...

2013

The gradient echo memory is a protocol for storing optical quantum states of light in atomic ensembles. Quantum memory is a key element of a quantum repeater, which can extend the range of quantum key distribution. We outline the operation of the scheme when implemented in a 3-level atomic ensemble.
