Transgenic Zebrafish Embryos

Transgenic zebrafish embryos are early-stage zebrafish that carry an introduced DNA sequence, providing a tractable model for observing how genes regulate development. Researchers typically deliver DNA constructs into fertilized eggs, where regulatory elements can drive expression of a reporter or functional gene in selected tissues; stable integration can transmit the transgene to subsequent generations. Because embryos develop externally and remain optically accessible, investigators can track cell behavior, tissue formation, and gene activity in living animals. These embryos support studies of gene function, developmental patterning, disease mechanisms, and experimental perturbations, linking molecular regulation with visible changes in embryonic development.

2023

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an important model organism that is particularly valuable for research in developmental biology. Zebrafish are extremely fertile and can produce hundreds of progeny per week, so it is relatively easy to collect a large number of embryos for high sample numbers. Furthermore, zebrafish undergo rapid development and embryos are transparent, allowing for easy visualization of developmental processes. This video covers the steps required for the collection of newly...

Live tracking of individual WT retinal progenitors in distinct genetic backgrounds allows for the assessment of the contribution of cell non-autonomous signaling during neurogenesis. Here, a combination of gene knockdown, chimera generation via embryo transplantation and in vivo time-lapse confocal imaging was utilized for this purpose.
