Anatomical Functional Assessment

Anatomical functional assessment is the systematic evaluation of how an anatomical structure’s form supports or limits its function, linking physical design with measurable performance. In engineering applications, it combines structural characterization, observations of movement or loading, and functional measurements to identify relationships between geometry, mechanical behavior, and performance under defined conditions. This approach helps researchers evaluate prostheses, orthoses, biomedical devices, and engineered tissues while guiding design optimization and validation. By connecting anatomy with mechanics and function, anatomical functional assessment can clarify failure modes, improve device compatibility, and support more reliable solutions for rehabilitation and clinical use.

We present a hands-on, step-by-step, rapid protocol for mouse brain removal and dissection of discrete regions from fresh brain tissue. Obtaining brain regions for molecular analysis has become routine in many neuroscience labs. These brain regions are immediately frozen to obtain high quality transcriptomic data for system level analysis.

Assessment of Neuromuscular Function Using Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

We present a protocol to assess changes in neuromuscular function. Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a non-invasive method that evokes muscular responses. Electrophysiological and mechanical properties of these responses permit the evaluation of neuromuscular function from brain to muscle (supra-spinal, spinal and peripheral levels).

The primary outcome measure in clinical trials for neuromuscular disorders is generally improved muscle function. Therefore, assessing the effect of potential therapeutic compounds on muscle performance pre clinically in mouse models is of great importance. We here describe several functional tests to address this.
