Leakage Impedances

Leakage impedances are effective electrical impedances that represent resistance and reactance arising when current follows an unintended path or, in transformers, when leakage flux links one winding but not the other. When a voltage is applied, these components produce voltage drops and phase shifts; transformer leakage impedance therefore depends on winding geometry, spacing, and magnetic coupling. Engineers use leakage impedance to predict voltage regulation, limit short-circuit current, set protection requirements, and assess power-transfer performance. Accurate impedance models support transformer design, circuit simulation, and safe operation of electrical systems.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...

Consider a string of christmas lights, each bulb symbolizing an impedance element. In this series configuration, the flow of electric current remains uniform across every component. This behavior aligns with Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL), which asserts that the total impedance in such a setup equals the sum of individual impedances—akin to resistors in series. It follows that the voltage from the power source is distributed proportionally among these components, adhering to the voltage division...

(2020)This video demonstrates an impedance-based assay to measure glioblastoma cell invasion and migration. Cells degrade the extracellular matrix, move through microporous membranes, and adhere to electrodes, generating impedance. This real-time analysis reflects their invasive potential for cancer research applications.
