Disease Induction

Disease induction is the deliberate initiation of disease or disease-like pathology in a biological system to reproduce defined features under controlled conditions. In immunology and infection research, investigators introduce a pathogen, antigen, toxin, genetic change, or other trigger, then monitor how host recognition, microbial replication, tissue injury, and inflammatory signaling generate measurable symptoms and immune responses. These models help clarify disease mechanisms, identify biomarkers, and evaluate vaccines, antimicrobial agents, and immunotherapies. Carefully standardized induction conditions support comparisons across experiments while reducing variability, although model selection and ethical oversight remain essential when translating findings to human disease.

This manuscript describes the methods for induction and scoring of the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, together with the assessment of immune cell distribution and mRNA cytokine levels in lymph nodes, spleen, blood and spinal cord using flow cytometry and quantitative PCR, respectively, at various disease phases.

Induction of Levodopa-Induced Dyskinesias in a Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment will use inductive coils to demonstrate the concept of inductor and inductance. Magnetic induction will be demonstrated using a rod magnet inserted into or extracted away from the core of a coil to induce a transient electromotive force (emf) voltage in the coil, measured by a voltmeter. This experiment will also demonstrate the mutual inductance between...

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objectives of this experiment are to find the equivalent circuit parameters of a three-phase induction motor using the per-phase equivalent circuit and tests similar to those used in transformer characterization. In electrical engineering, an equivalent circuit (or theoretical circuit) can be determined for a given system. The equivalent circuit retains all characteristics of the original system,...
