Non-response Issues

Non-response issues are problems that arise when selected individuals, firms, or institutions fail to provide complete and timely information, potentially weakening the quality of macroeconomic data. In economic surveys, non-response can be random or systematic: when participation varies with income, industry, expectations, or economic conditions, the resulting sample may misrepresent the broader population; researchers may address this through follow-ups, weighting, or imputation. These issues affect estimates of employment, inflation, consumption, business activity, and national income, influencing forecasts and policy decisions. Assessing response rates and non-response bias is therefore essential for interpreting official statistics and maintaining confidence in macroeconomic analysis.
