Buyer Power

Buyer power is the influence customers exert over a seller’s prices, terms, product features, and service levels, making it a key concept in marketing and competitive analysis. It increases when buyers are concentrated, well informed, price sensitive, or able to switch easily among comparable alternatives; it weakens when products are differentiated, switching costs are high, or suppliers offer distinctive value. Marketers assess these conditions through customer research, competitor analysis, and evaluation of purchase alternatives to understand who captures value in an exchange. This analysis supports segmentation, pricing, positioning, retention strategies, and negotiation planning while helping organizations strengthen perceived value and reduce incentives to switch.
