Anesthesia Emergence

Anesthesia emergence is the transition from a medically induced state of unconsciousness to restored consciousness, protective reflexes, and independent physiological function after general anesthesia. As anesthetic concentrations decline through redistribution, metabolism, and elimination, neural activity and neuromuscular function return; clinicians may also reverse residual muscle relaxation while monitoring ventilation, airway patency, circulation, and responsiveness. Careful management of this phase helps identify and treat airway obstruction, hypoventilation, hemodynamic instability, pain, nausea, and emergence delirium. Understanding emergence supports safer postoperative recovery, guides decisions about extubation and observation, and informs research on anesthetic pharmacology and individualized perioperative care.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...

Guidelines in Case of a Laboratory Emergency

2023

Robert M. Rioux & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The most common laboratory emergencies include chemical spills, fire or explosion, electric shock, and personnel injuries. Most laboratory accidents occur due to poor planning or lack of attention. Therefore, it's always better to prevent accidents (being proactive) than having to take any actions during an emergency (being reactive). For example, always wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in the...

Emerging Adulthood

Jeffrey Arnett's concept of emerging adulthood offers a framework to understand the unique developmental stage between adolescence and full-fledged adulthood, generally from ages 18 to 25. This period is marked by extensive exploration and shifts in identity, relationships, and career choices, a process known in psychology as role experimentation. Emerging adulthood reflects the evolving cultural expectations surrounding adulthood and the dynamic process of personal transformation during this...

Anesthesia and Monitoring in a Rabbit Model

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Anesthesia is an essential component of rabbit surgical and experimental procedures because it prevents pain, reduces stress responses, and helps immobilize the animal during handling and manipulation when general anesthesia is...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Pigs are commonly used in biomedical and surgical research because of their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans. During procedures, anesthesia prevents pain, reduces stress, limits movement, and supports animal...
