Carotid Artery Catheter

A carotid artery catheter is a thin, flexible tube used to access or assess the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain. Clinicians guide the catheter through the vascular system, often using real-time imaging, and may inject contrast material to visualize vessel structure, blood flow, narrowing, or blockage. This technique supports cerebral and carotid angiography, pressure measurements, and selected endovascular procedures, including treatment planning for stenosis or aneurysms. By providing detailed information about vessels that are difficult to evaluate externally, carotid catheterization helps guide diagnosis, intervention, and research on cerebrovascular disease while requiring careful attention to procedural safety.

2012

Passive mechanical testing of mouse carotid arteries is described, with special consideration for adapting to different specimen ages. The procedures include determining the in vivo length of the artery, mounting it in a pressure myograph, recording data, measuring the unloaded dimensions and analyzing the resulting data.

Carotid Artery and Jugular Vein Interposition: A Technique to Induce Venous Intimal Hyperplasia in Rabbit Model

2025

This video demonstrates the interposition of the rabbit carotid artery with the jugular vein to induce venous intimal hyperplasia by subjecting the veins to arterial pressure. This model will help investigate molecular and genetic interventions to attenuate the progression of intimal hyperplasia after revascularization surgeries.

A model of stent implantation in mouse carotid artery is described. Compared to other similar methods, this procedure is very rapid, simple and accessible, offering the possibility to study in a convenient way the vascular wall reaction to different drug-eluting stents and the molecular mechanisms of restenosis.

Detection of Internal Carotid Artery Narrowing Using Digital Subtraction Angiography

2025

Position a human patient with internal carotid stenosis, a condition characterized by narrowing of the internal carotid artery, on the imaging table for digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Insert an angiocatheter into the common carotid artery at the fourth cervical vertebra level. Capture a pre-contrast X-ray image to record background structures like bones and soft tissues using X-ray irradiation. Administer an iodine-based contrast medium into the carotid artery. The contrast medium...
