Donor Heart Harvest

Donor heart harvest is the surgical procurement of a viable heart from a deceased donor for transplantation, a time-critical procedure that supports treatment of advanced heart failure. Surgeons isolate the heart, stop its contractions with cardioplegia, flush it with a cold preservation solution, and remove it while minimizing ischemic injury. The organ is then inspected, packaged, transported, and implanted into a carefully selected recipient within a limited preservation window. Accurate donor assessment, coordinated operating-room practice, and rapid preservation are essential because graft quality and ischemic time strongly influence transplant success and long-term cardiac function.

Using an Isolated Working Rat Heart Model to Test Donor Heart Preservation Strategies

2024

We describe an ex vivo isolated working rat heart protocol to test donor heart preservation strategies. This paper describes the protocol for use in static cold storage of rodent donor hearts; however, the protocol can also be used for donor hearts obtained after donation after circulatory death and brain death.

Harvesting Articular Cartilage From Joints of an Equine Donor: A Surgical Procedure to Isolate Vascular Connective Tissue From Cadaveric Joints of an Equine Donor

In this video, we demonstrate the extraction of articular cartilage from an equine cadaveric joint. The isolated articular cartilage can be used for further downstream analysis.

Cuff-Free Suture-Based Cervical Model for Secondary Heterotopic Heart Transplantation to Evaluate Donor-Specific Immune Tolerance in Mice

This protocol presents a cuff-free, suture-based cervical heterotopic heart transplantation technique in mice, designed to enable the reliable placement of a second heterotopic cardiac graft for evaluating donor-specific immune tolerance under physiological conditions with minimal interference from foreign material.

Sinoatrial Node Isolation from Mouse Model: A Procedure to Harvest SA Node from Murine Heart

The cuff technique shortens and facilitates the model of heterotopic cervical heart transplantation in mice by avoiding technically challenging suture anastomoses of small vessels. The technical details shown in this video paper should allow researches to establish this model in their laboratories.
