Inguinal Hernia Surgery

Inguinal hernia surgery is a procedure that repairs a weakness in the lower abdominal wall where tissue, often part of the intestine, protrudes into the groin. During open or laparoscopic repair, the surgeon returns the displaced tissue to the abdominal cavity and reinforces the weakened area, commonly with a synthetic mesh or sutures. The operation can relieve pain, restore abdominal wall integrity, and prevent complications such as obstruction or strangulation. Surgical approach selection depends on hernia characteristics, patient health, prior operations, and available expertise, making this procedure an important application of anatomical assessment and minimally invasive surgical technique.

This manuscript describes methods associated with creation and repair of a ventral abdominal wall defect (hernia). This model can be used to study repair strategies such as those that use implanted materials. In this manuscript, repair of the experimental hernia with porcine small intestinal submucosa is presented as an example.

A technique for performing intravital microscopy of the inguinal lymph node (LN) is outlined. Such technique allows for real-time, in vivo study of the lymph node microvasculature and structure both during homeostasis and infection. This technique can be adapted to cell trafficking studies and to other lymph node sites.

Mouse Inguinal Lymph Node Volume Analysis: An Ultra-high-frequency Ultrasound Imaging Technique to Determine the Volume of Inguinal Lymph Node in Mouse Model

In this video, we demonstrate the technique to image the inguinal lymph node in a mouse model using ultra-high-frequency ultrasound imaging. This non-invasive imaging technique allows the monitoring of the change in lymph node volume in the animal over time.

Harvesting an Inguinal Draining Lymph Node from a Murine Model

This video demonstrates the surgical isolation procedure of the inguinal draining lymph node from a mouse model. Incision of the abdominal region provides access to the inguinal lymph node, which is surgically harvested. The harvested translucent inguinal lymph node can be used for immunological studies.
