Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy

Percutaneous endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive spinal procedure that removes herniated or extruded intervertebral disc material compressing a spinal nerve, making it an important treatment approach for selected patients with radicular pain. Through a small skin incision, a guidewire and dilator create a working channel, while an endoscope provides direct visualization and specialized instruments extract the offending fragment with limited disruption of surrounding tissues. In medicine, the technique can relieve nerve-related symptoms, improve function, and reduce surgical tissue trauma in appropriate cases, while also advancing image-guided approaches to spinal care.

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA A surgical airway procedure is indicated when other forms of endotracheal intubation have failed and ventilation is worsening or not possible. This is the feared "can't intubate, can't ventilate" scenario, and in the emergency setting, cricothyrotomy is the surgical procedure of choice. Cricothyrotomy is preferred over tracheotomy because of the lower risk of complications, the predictable anatomy...
