Surgical Mi Model

A surgical myocardial infarction (MI) model is an experimental system that reproduces heart attack by surgically restricting coronary blood flow, enabling controlled study of cardiac injury and repair. In common animal models, researchers expose the heart through thoracotomy and ligate or temporarily occlude the left anterior descending coronary artery, producing ischemia followed by infarction when blood supply is reduced or interrupted. These models help investigators measure ventricular remodeling, inflammation, scar formation, and functional decline, while evaluating cardioprotective drugs, cell-based therapies, biomaterials, and regenerative strategies. Their controlled timing and severity also support comparisons among interventions and improve understanding of post-MI healing.
