Initial Allocation

Initial allocation is the distribution of resources, goods, income, or ownership rights among individuals or groups before economic exchange or redistribution occurs. In microeconomics, it establishes each agent’s initial endowment and therefore shapes budget constraints, trade opportunities, and the set of feasible outcomes; individuals may then exchange goods when differences in preferences or endowments create mutual gains. Analyzing initial allocation helps economists compare market equilibria, evaluate efficiency and equity, and assess how alternative distributions affect welfare. The concept is central to models of competitive exchange, resource allocation, bargaining, and policy design.
