Arterial Pressure Measurement

Arterial pressure measurement is the assessment of blood pressure within arteries, providing key information about cardiovascular function and tissue perfusion. It typically uses an inflatable cuff to temporarily occlude an artery, then detects pressure changes as blood flow returns to estimate systolic and diastolic pressure; invasive methods instead use a fluid-filled catheter connected to a pressure transducer for continuous recordings. In neuroscience, these measurements help evaluate cerebral perfusion, autonomic regulation, and cardiovascular responses to neural activity or experimental interventions. Accurate readings support research on brain blood flow, neurovascular coupling, hypertension, and conditions in which altered pressure can affect nervous-system function.

2025

The protocol provides a detailed introduction to the experience of using the right heart catheterization method to detect pulmonary artery pressure in rats, which will help to obtain accurate data more efficiently and improve the success rate of the experiment. This method also improves the reproducibility of experiments across different laboratories.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

Assessing Murine Resistance Artery Function Using Pressure Myography

In pressure myography, an intact small segment of a vessel is mounted onto two small cannulas and pressurized to a suitable luminal pressure. Here, we describe the method to measure vasorelaxation response of the mouse 3rd order mesenteric arteries in c57 and sGCα1-/- mice using pressure myography.

Chronic catheterization of blood vessels in the rat is often required for administration of substances, obtain blood sample over a period of time or for direct conscious blood pressure measurements. Femoral arterial catheterization of the rat and corresponding measurements of blood pressure in the conscious animal will be demonstrated.

Assessing Myogenic Response and Vasoactivity In Resistance Mesenteric Arteries Using Pressure Myography

Pressure myography is used to assess vasoactivity of small arteries that develop sustained constriction when pressurized. This manuscript provides a detailed protocol to assess in isolated segments of small mesenteric arteries from rats, vasoactivity and the effect of intraluminal pressure on vascular diameter.
