Manual Dexterity Assessment

Manual Dexterity Assessment is a set of standardized behavioral tests used to measure how accurately, quickly, and consistently a person performs coordinated hand and finger movements. These assessments typically require tasks such as placing, turning, tapping, or manipulating objects, allowing researchers to quantify motor planning, visuomotor coordination, fine motor control, and response speed. In neuroscience, performance patterns can help characterize motor-system function and reveal changes associated with neurological injury, disease, development, or rehabilitation. Repeated measurements also provide objective outcomes for evaluating treatment effects, tracking recovery, and comparing motor performance across individuals or experimental conditions.

As manual dexterity is a prerogative mainly of primates, behavioral tasks have been developed in macaque monkeys. Four reach and grasp prehension tasks, measuring hand manipulation ability and force, allow to establish functional recovery after a lesion of the central nervous system and to test the effect of a treatment.

Assessing Dexterity with Reaching Tasks

2023

Reaching tasks are employed in behavioral neuroscience to investigate motor learning and forelimb dexterity. Much like human hands, rodents have dexterous forepaws, which are necessary for executing coordinated and precise motor movements. Experimenters may utilize food rewards to train rodents to reach and for testing their reaching abilities. These tasks help behavioral neuroscientist in understanding how CNS injuries, such as a stroke, may impair reaching ability and dexterity in humans.

The Vermicelli and Capellini Handling Tests of forepaw dexterity take advantage of the natural inclination of rodents to manipulate food items using skillful forepaw and digit movements. Animals are videotaped while handling short strands of uncooked dry pasta. Slow motion video playback allows for the quantification of forepaw adjustments.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Rabbits possess powerful hindlimb musculature and are susceptible to spinal injury if they struggle or kick while inadequately supported. Because rabbits vary in temperament and may struggle during restraint, handlers should...
