Peripheral Organ Protection

Peripheral organ protection refers to strategies that preserve the structure and function of organs outside the brain and spinal cord during neurological disease, injury, or treatment. These approaches limit harmful systemic effects by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, maintaining blood flow and tissue barriers, and supporting cellular repair in organs such as the heart, kidneys, lungs, and liver. In neuroscience, peripheral organ protection helps clarify how central nervous system disorders affect the body and how interventions influence multiple organ systems. It can improve experimental models, guide safer therapeutic development, and support treatments that protect whole-body health alongside neural function.

Zones of Protection

In power systems, the entire setup is divided into protective zones to isolate faults and protect the rest of the network. These zones include generators, transformers, buses, transmission lines, distribution lines, and motors. Each zone can be visualized as a separate room in a house, with each room protected by its own circuit breaker. Protective zones are defined by closed dashed lines, containing one or more components. A key characteristic of these zones is the strategic placement of...

This lesson delves into the concept of protection and deprotection of a functional group fundamental to synthetic organic chemistry. These phenomena are explained in the context of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols. Protection It defines a protecting group as the masking agent to make the more reactive species inert to a given set of conditions. This concept is depicted via the illustration of liquid flow through different outlets in an assembly of pipes. The analogy helps to understand the role...

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA Placement of an intravenous (IV) catheter is one of the key procedures in medicine. The IV catheter allows patients to receive critical medications, including pain medicine, insulin, antibiotics, blood products, and fluids for rehydration. Additionally, placing an IV catheter allows for blood samples to be obtained, which can be sent to the laboratory for testing and...
