Social Cognition

Social cognition is the set of mental processes people use to perceive, interpret, and respond to other individuals, making it central to communication, cooperation, and social behavior. It operates by integrating sensory information about faces, voices, actions, and context with memory, emotion, and mentalizing, the inference of another person’s beliefs, intentions, or feelings; distributed networks involving the prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction, amygdala, and related regions support these computations. In neuroscience, social cognition research examines how these systems develop and interact during real-world social behavior. Its findings inform research on autism, schizophrenia, social anxiety, decision-making, and disorders that affect interpersonal functioning.
