Dicarboxylate Containing

Dicarboxylate-containing compounds are molecules with two carboxylate groups that influence their chemical behavior and pharmacological properties. In aqueous biological environments, these groups can lose protons and become negatively charged, increasing polarity while enabling ionic and hydrogen-bonding interactions with proteins, metal ions, and transport systems. These features affect solubility, membrane permeability, distribution, elimination, and binding to drug targets. In pharmacology, understanding dicarboxylate chemistry supports the design and evaluation of therapeutic agents, including strategies that modify ionization or use prodrug approaches to improve absorption and tissue delivery.

Intramolecular Claisen Condensation of Dicarboxylic Esters: Dieckmann Cyclization

2023

Dieckmann cyclization is an intramolecular Claisen condensation of diesters. The reaction occurs in the presence of a base and generates a cyclic β-ketoester as the final product. Commonly, 1, 6 and 1, 7-diesters are preferred substrates for the reaction since the generated five, and six-membered cyclic β-keto esters are particularly more stable. In the reaction, α carbon connected to one end of the ester ends serves as an enolate nucleophile after losing its proton to the base. The carbonyl...

Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Polymers are made from macromolecules, which are composed of repeating units (the so called monomeric units). In our modern world, polymers play an important role. One of the first important polymers was nylon, which is a polyamide. It found widespread application in tooth brushes and stockings.
