Dural Puncture Risk

Dural puncture risk is the likelihood that a needle or catheter will unintentionally breach the dura mater during a neuraxial procedure, an event that can affect anesthetic safety and patient recovery. It depends on factors such as needle design and size, insertion technique, and patient anatomy; when cerebrospinal fluid escapes through the dural opening, altered intracranial pressure can produce a post-dural puncture headache and related symptoms. In pharmacology, understanding this risk helps clinicians plan spinal or epidural drug administration, evaluate concurrent therapies such as anticoagulants, and monitor for complications. Risk assessment supports informed consent, prevention, and timely treatment when symptoms occur.
