Laser Beam Stabilization

Laser beam stabilization is the control of a laser’s direction, position, intensity, or frequency so the beam remains steady despite vibration, thermal drift, or other disturbances. In a typical feedback system, photodetectors or position-sensitive sensors measure deviations from a reference, and a controller drives actuators such as steering mirrors, optical mounts, or power modulators to correct the error continuously. This technique improves alignment, pointing accuracy, and measurement repeatability in interferometry, microscopy, spectroscopy, optical communication, and precision experiments. Stable beams are especially important when small phase, displacement, or frequency changes carry the scientific signal.

Large laser-interferometers are being constructed to create a new type of astronomy based on gravitational waves. Their sensitivities, as for many other high-precision experiments, are approaching fundamental noise limits such as the atomic vibration of their components. We are pioneering technologies to overcome these limits using novel laser beam shapes.

We show how to encode the complex field of laser beams by using a single phase element. A common-path interferometer is employed to mix the phase information displayed into a phase-only spatial light modulator to finally retrieve the desired complex field pattern at the output of an optical imaging system.

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.

Beams are integral components of structural engineering and construction, designed to support loads applied at various points along their length. These long, straight members can be classified based on geometry, cross-section, support type, and equilibrium condition. Based on geometry, beams can be straight, tapered, or curved. Straight beams are the most common type and have a constant cross-section throughout their length. Tapered beams, on the other hand, have a varying cross-section along...
