Trend Identification

Trend identification is the statistical process of detecting persistent patterns or directional changes in data over time, helping distinguish meaningful movement from random variation. It typically involves organizing observations chronologically, visualizing the data, and applying methods such as smoothing, regression, or decomposition to separate long-term trends from seasonal and irregular effects. Analysts use trend identification in economics, public health, environmental monitoring, business, and scientific research to describe changing conditions, evaluate interventions, and support forecasting. Careful interpretation is essential because outliers, sampling bias, changing measurement practices, and correlation among observations can create misleading apparent trends.
