Question 1

What should a proper rodent transport cage contain?

Accepted Answer

A transport cage must provide adequate ventilation, bedding, food, and a hydration source such as a gel pack. These elements ensure the animal remains comfortable and hydrated during movement. The cage should be securely closed, labeled with 'Live Animals' and relevant transport information, and covered with breathable material to reduce external stimulation while maintaining proper ventilation and temperature control.

Question 2

Why should rodents avoid public transportation during research transport?

Accepted Answer

Public areas expose animals to excessive noise, vibrations, unfamiliar odors, temperature fluctuations, and human activity, all of which trigger stress responses. Designated institutional routes minimize these stressors and reduce transport-related stress. Keeping the cage upright, level, and secure during transport further prevents unnecessary movement and injury, supporting animal welfare and experimental validity.

Question 3

What is the purpose of disinfecting the transport cage upon arrival?

Accepted Answer

Disinfecting the exterior of the transport cage before entering the animal facility reduces the risk of introducing contaminants into the vivarium. This is typically achieved by spraying or wiping the cage with an approved disinfectant and allowing sufficient contact time according to institutional guidelines. This biosecurity step protects the health of resident animals and maintains facility standards.

Question 4

How long should rodents be allowed to acclimatize after transport?

Accepted Answer

Animals should be allowed an acclimatization period, typically 48–72 hours or as specified by institutional guidelines, to recover from transport-related stress. During this time, monitoring of body weight, health status, food and water intake, grooming, activity, and social interactions helps identify signs of stress and confirm successful acclimatization before experimental procedures begin.

Question 5

What behavioral indicators show successful rodent acclimatization?

Accepted Answer

Stable physiological and behavioral parameters indicate successful acclimatization. Observe animals for normal food and water intake, appropriate grooming, typical activity levels, and positive social interactions. Gentle handling combined with habituation and positive reinforcement for rodent handling can further support stress recovery and prepare animals for research procedures.

Question 6

How should mice be placed into a transport cage to minimize stress?

Accepted Answer

Gently place mice into the cage, avoiding overcrowding to minimize stress, aggression, and the risk of injury. Careful handling during loading reduces transport-related physiological disruption. Once loaded, secure the cage and cover it with breathable material to reduce external stimulation while maintaining adequate ventilation throughout transport.

Question 7

What health monitoring occurs during the rodent acclimatization period?

Accepted Answer

Incoming animals are monitored for body weight, health status, food and water intake, grooming, activity, and social interactions. These observations help identify signs of transport-related stress and confirm recovery. Monitoring occurs in accordance with facility-specific health surveillance, quarantine, and biosecurity procedures before or during acclimatization to ensure readiness for experimental work.
