The Water Cycle

- [Professeur] L'hydrosphère comprend toute la zoneoù on retrouve de l'eau sur Terre. 
La plus grande partie des réserves d'eau terrestres estdans les océans où une molécule d'eaupeut subsister jusqu'à 3 000 ans. 
On appelle cela leur temps de séjour. 
Les molécules d'eau présentes dans les sources d'eau douce,les lacs et cours d'eau, ont un cycle bien plus court. 
Le cycle commence quand l'énergie solaireréchauffe et évapore la couche d'eau à la surfacedes océans, des cours d'eau et des lacs dans l'atmosphèreoù elle est condensée jusqu'à former des nuages. 
L'eau retombe sur terre par les précipitations. 
Elle s'écoule ensuite jusqu'à revenir dans l'océanen empruntant les ruisseaux et les lacs,elle filtre dans les aquifères,s'écoule sous la surface dans les nappes phréatiquesou s'évapore à nouveau par le biais de la transpirationdes plantes.

L’hydrosphère terrestre comprend toutes les zones où se produit le stockage et le mouvement de l’eau. Puisque l’eau est la base de tous les processus vivants, le cycle de l’eau est extrêmement important pour la dynamique des écosystèmes.
 
 Le cycle de l’eau commence lorsque le soleil réchauffe l’eau à la surface de la terre et des océans, ce qui la fait s’évaporer et entrer dans l’atmosphère sous forme de vapeur. La vapeur d’eau se condense en nuages et finit par tomber comme des précipitations sous forme de pluie, de neige ou de grêle.
 
 Après être retombée sur la Terre, l’eau peut pénétrer dans de grands plans d’eau, s’évaporer à nouveau, rester à la surface comme un ruissellement ou s’infiltrer dans le sol, où elle peut être absorbée par les plantes et transpirée (libérée depuis les pores des feuilles et évaporée dans l’atmosphère) ou devenir des eaux souterraines. Les eaux souterraines profondes peuvent former des réservoirs, ou des aquifères, et les eaux souterraines peu profondes finissent par atteindre un plan d’eau où elles peuvent être évaporées sous forme d’eau de surface pour poursuivre le cycle.
 
 <h4>Stockage à long terme</h4>
 
 Les cellules humaines sont constitués de plus de 70 % d’eau, et presque tous les organismes sur terre ont besoin d’eau douce pour survivre. Cependant, 97,5 % de l’eau sur Terre est de l’eau salée, et moins de 1 % de l’eau douce est accessible par le biais des rivières et des lacs. La plus grande partie de l’eau sur Terre existe en tant que glace, eau souterraine ou eau salée dans les océans et les mers, et elle est inaccessible à de nombreuses plantes, animaux et champignons, ainsi qu’indisponible pour le cycle à court terme. Sous ces formes, l’eau est stockée pendant de longues périodes, appelées temps de résidence, avant d’entrer dans le cycle de l’eau.

 L’énergie du soleil réchauffe l’eau de surface sur terre et dans l’océan, ce qui la fait entrer dans l’atmosphère par évaporation, sublimation (vaporisation de la glace à partir d’une forme solide) et transpiration (évaporation de l’eau à partir des plantes). La vapeur d’eau se condense ensuite pour former des nuages et finit par tomber sur terre sous forme de précipitations (p. ex., la pluie ou la neige). L’eau qui revient à la surface de la Terre peut : remplir les plans d’eau, s’évaporer à nouveau du sol, pénétrer le sol pour être absorbée et transpirée par les plantes, couler sous la surface sous forme d’eau souterraine, ou être stockée pendant de longues périodes dans les aquifères.

Water movement through Earth systems connects the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, the land, and living things. The hydrosphere includes every place where water is stored or moves. Because water supports living processes, its movement is important for ecosystem dynamics.

The cycle starts when the sun warms surface water on land and in the oceans. That water evaporates and enters the atmosphere as vapor. Water can also move into the air by sublimation, which is ice changing directly into vapor, and by transpiration, which is water released from plant leaves and then evaporated.

Water vapor cools and condenses into clouds. It later falls back to Earth as precipitation, such as rain, snow, or hail. After that, the water may collect in large bodies of water, evaporate again from the ground, run off across the surface, or seep into soil.

Some water in the soil is absorbed by plants and returned to the atmosphere through transpiration. Some becomes groundwater, which moves below the surface. Deep groundwater can form reservoirs called aquifers, while shallow groundwater eventually reaches a body of water and can evaporate again as surface water.

Water also stays stored for long periods before it enters the cycle again. Human cells are over 70% water, and almost all land organisms need fresh water to survive. Yet 97.5% of Earth’s water is saltwater, and less than 1% of freshwater is accessible in rivers and lakes.

Most water on Earth is locked up as ice, groundwater, or saltwater in the oceans and seas. These stores have long residence times, which means the water remains there for extended periods. They are not part of short-term cycling until the water moves back into the active water cycle.
