The Sulfur Cycle

- [Instructeur] En tant que molécule gazeuse,le soufre cycle entre l'atmosphère,les écosystèmes terrestre et aquatique. 
Une forme, le dioxyde de soufre ou SO2,pénètre dans l'atmosphère via celle-ci,soit sous forme d'acide sulfurique faibledissous dans les précipitations,soit directement déposéedans un processus appelé « retombées ». 
L'altération des roches contenant du soufrerésultant du soulèvement géologiquedes sédiments océaniques,contribue aussi à l'émission du soufredans l'écosystème terrestre. 
À partir du sol, le soufrepénètre ensuite dans la chaîne alimentairepar les racines des plantes sous forme de sulfates,lesquels sont consommés par les hétérotropheset relâchés dans l'atmosphèresous forme de sulfure d'hydrogènepar les décomposeurs après la mort des organismes. 
L'excès de soufre présent dans le sol et passant à traversles bouches géothermiques souterraines pénètredans l'océan sous forme de ruissellement,où il se précipite dans les sédiments au fond de l'océanou est utilisé comme source d'énergie biologiquepar les chimioautotrophes marins. 
L'activité volcanique et les cheminées géothermiqueslibèrent aussi du soufre dans l'atmosphère sous formede sulfure d'hydrogènesuivant un processus naturel. 
Cependant, l'utilisation de combustibles fossiles génèreune quantité anormalement importante dans l'atmosphère,qui retourne au sol sous forme de pluie acide,endommageant les écosystèmes.

Le soufre, un élément important dans la composition chimique des protéines, est recyclé à travers l’atmosphère et les environnements aquatiques et terrestres. Se trouvant dans l’atmosphère en tant que dioxyde de soufre (SO2), le soufre est libéré par les organismes en décomposition, les roches érodées, les cheminées géothermiques, les volcans et la combustion de combustibles fossiles. Il se dépose dans l’écosystème, traverse la communauté biotique et soit il est rejeté dans l’atmosphère sous forme de gaz, soit il se dépose en sédiments marins pour être stocké à long terme et finalement relâché dans le sol et l’atmosphère.
 
 <h4>Le cycle biogéochimique du soufre</h4>
 
 Le soufre est essentiel aux systèmes biologiques et il est un constituant de certains acides aminés, tels que la cystéine, qui joue un rôle important dans la structure des protéines. Le soufre est distribué aux écosystèmes terrestres par la précipitation d’acide sulfurique faible, les retombées directes de l’atmosphère, l’érosion de roches contenant du soufre et les cheminées géothermiques.
 
 Du sol, il est absorbé par les micro-organismes et les plantes et transformé en formes organiques qui peuvent être utilisées par les consommateurs dans l’écosystème. Lorsque les organismes meurent, les décomposeurs décomposent les composés organiques de soufre en gaz, tels que le sulfure d’hydrogène, qui est oxydé dans l’atmosphère pour former du dioxyde de soufre. En outre, certains chimioautotrophes utilisent le soufre comme source d’énergie biologique et recyclent les molécules de soufre directement à travers les écosystèmes.
 
 Le soufre est introduit dans les écosystèmes marins par le ruissellement de la terre, les retombées directes de l’atmosphère et les cheminées géothermiques sous-marines. Une partie de ce soufre traverse la chaîne alimentaire et elle est rejetée dans l’atmosphère sous forme de pulvérisation marine. Le reste est déposé sous forme de sédiments sur le fond océanique, où il est stocké pendant de longues périodes. Au fil du temps géologique, la surrection peut envoyer les sédiments vers la terre ferme, où le soufre est libéré par l’érosion.
 
 <h4>Impacts humains sur le cycle du soufre</h4>
 
 L’utilisation de combustibles fossiles, en particulier le charbon, ajoute une quantité anormale de sulfure d’hydrogène gazeux dans l’atmosphère, ce qui entraîne une concentration plus élevée de dioxyde de soufre qui se manifeste par des pluies acides. Les pluies acides endommagent l’environnement en abaissant le pH des lacs et des rivières, ce qui nuit à la faune aquatique et terrestre.

Sulfur moves through ecosystems as part of the chemical cycle that supports life. It is an important element in proteins and in amino acids such as cysteine, which helps give proteins their structure.

On land, sulfur reaches ecosystems in several ways. Weak sulfuric acid can fall with precipitation, sulfur can drop directly from the atmosphere, rocks can weather and release sulfur, and geothermal vents can add it as well. Plants and microorganisms take sulfur up from the soil and change it into organic forms that consumers can use.

When organisms die, decomposers break down organic sulfur compounds. This process can release gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which is then oxidized in the atmosphere to form sulfur dioxide. Some chemoautotrophs also use sulfur as an energy source, so sulfur can move directly through ecosystems in that way.

Marine ecosystems also receive sulfur from runoff from land, fallout from the atmosphere, and underwater geothermal vents. Some of it moves through the food chain and returns to the atmosphere as sea spray. The rest becomes sediment on the ocean floor, where it can stay for long periods before uplift and erosion return it to land.

Human activity can change this cycle. Burning fossil fuels, especially coal, adds extra hydrogen sulfide gas to the atmosphere and raises sulfur dioxide levels. This can lead to acid rain, which lowers the pH of lakes and rivers and harms both aquatic and terrestrial animals.
